Archive for: update
I’m thinking of building a plugin that will auto-update all the plugins (yes… automatically ..haha). I will build this if I get enough requests.. but before you wordpress lovers say “YES, YES, YES!!” i want to point a few things out:
If the plugin will be made, it will only update all of the plugins, automatically after it checks for each installed plugins updates once every x minutes or hours or days…. IF and only IF a an administrator has logged in the wp-admin panel. So the script will only run once an administrator has logged in admin panel. (and i’m not entirely 100% sure if/how to make this work perfectly for each server)
Why?
- Because cron jobs might not work (at all or correctly) on all servers and hosts where wordpress is installed
- Because if i make it run each time a user loads a page then your site will load slower and your cpu will be used more once you have hight traffic(short: because it’s inefficient that way)
- Because HTTPRequest might not work for some servers
I’m thinking of opening a popup or another page as a sollution to where the script to update all the plugins is going to load withouth being disrupted…
Give me your thoughts please… Do you want this? would you make these compromises? Have any better ideas? (i just came up with the ideea in the last 24 hrs and found these solutions so far)

At last, the long awaited 2.1 version of this plugin, after being delayed for quite a while from it’s promised deadline, it’s finally here with a timer interface based on jquery and a lot of new exciting features. We are excited about this new update because it has made a huge step from it’s original version and it’s predecessor (and it was about time too). The plugin is available for download and is up and running. +Continue Reading
A new website is born today. Live Countdown Timer is one of our most successful plugins that we recently updated it to a new version. That new version is a place where we fixed all the requested bugs and added all the requested features( thanks everybody for the feedback! ), but also a place where we linked the plugin (from now on) to a new website: LCT (live countdown timer).
WHAT? WHAT? WHAT?
The idea behind this project is to organize all the events in the world, give them a nice looking timer and let everybody join in. So we decided to start with wordpress because all of the good feedback we received from the Live Countdown Timer Plugin(thanks again everyone!).
How is this useful? How could you take this further? What’s the big picture?
It’s a place where all the events happening in blogs, websites, news ..etc will be stored. A timer for each event is being formed. People will be able to rate and comment these events. People don’t use tags and categories that much (at least we are not trying to “complicate” things by using them) so we are going to try to organize these things as hard as we can.
LCT wants to organize all the events it can get… we are trying to bring it further with new enhancements to the website and we will try to give more flexibility to the functionality but for now you will have to use it as it is.
Let us know what you think!
And just in case you missed it above… HERE’S THE LINK to the website.
Yes, you read right! “Why?” you ask? … well, actually because after 4 months and 6 days, 10 plugins and 3 themes (1 of witch accepted on wordpress.org), it’s not been going as good as i’d hoped it would go. I can’t say we have great free plugins to offer but in the process i realized some important things that hit me like a cold shower in the morning.
It takes time
Everything that’s open source, if you are not google and just announced google wave (and still did not send the long awaited invites BTW), is very hard to promote. Especially if you are just testing the market. And if you (like me) take a look at the statistics of all the major plugins from the wordpress.org plugin directory to see that they did not start yesterday, last week or 4 months ago, but in 2008 or 2007 and if you look at them evolving you can see they all started small. Now… i am very grateful for the amount of downloads received on the Live Countdown Timer plugin, Advanced Twitter and Youtube Widget… and a few others, but it’s not enough, and at this point i don’t have the time to invest in something that might not take off, no matter how good it is. (i have one big idea but, I am 1 guy, so unless you want me to start now and finish in 4 years, i have a better strategy. Can’t tell you what it is, but I can say it involves taking a leave of absence (only temporary hopefully, but definitely long) from appchain.com. The plugins need to evolve in time, they need to get popular and i need to do what i know i must do…
One thing though…
When wordpress reaches 2.9, i will try to break some time and fix any incompatibilities/problems/bugs in the plugins and themes. I will still be around, I will still check stuff, statistics and from time to time answer comments… just 1-5% of the time i’ve been dedicating so far (so you can imagine how low). So you guys can still keep bugging me if it’s really important.
Yes, it really is necessary!
Because it’s a evolutionary step , because i realized this particular job takes time (i’m talking about developing free plugins for wordpress) and because i have no great ideas that really need work. Let’s face it, in 4 months, 10 plugins and 3 themes is kind of OK for 1 guy.. no? (i’ve actually worked on other projects in this time too.. It’s actually been a loong hard road on all the work for appchain (not long and hard enough it seems) so, YES, what i am about to do now is really necessary.
But Enough About Me..
Don’t hesitate to write or call, invite me to wordcamps or other conferences, send me pictures or love letters… You guys made these 4 months happen so i propose something… If you developers out there want to continue the work on any of the plugins or themes from appchain.com, you are welcomed to do this. I will give you your names and the websites in description and make postes about you. This has actually happened with 2 users (they upgraded plugins for me). I will be available for any upgrade! you just give me the source. I will test and make it go on wordpress.org
Untill next time… I salute you,
Ciprian

Yet another wordpress plugin, this time with some very necessary functionality. Auto FTP is a small but usefull plugin that helps users add their FTP information in the plugin FTP page so that information is no longer needed when upgrading or installing a theme or plugin.
All you need to do is install it, then go under Settings in Wp-admin and insert your host, user and password in the textboxes, then hit the update button.
All of your future installs will work automatically, no more will you be bugged by the ftp details page as long as Auto FTP is active and running.
Warning: if you don’t add your correct host, user and password, it will not work!
Be sure to comment here for bugs, features, impressions, thanks..etc

A very nice update that, somehow i got 1 day late.
I was checking last night for the update, knowing it will come out on the 10′th and how it was already the end of the day, I was a little surprised it was not there…
So as you can see on the image on the left, the thing i choose to show about wp 2.8 is the thing i like most on the upgrade, the new plugin page.
It’s more organized, more compact, colors (well, white and light grey) define the plugin state (enabled or not).
Jumping to another thought , I have 2 new plugin ideas that i hope to have time to implement as fast and as good as i can. But untill then i first need to upgrade Background Changer plugin. (Mood personalizer is already upgraded).
